Raw Material - Time is (1971)

RAW MATERIAL is a British band that released two albums in the ealy 70Тs that are now highly collectible. The group consist of your standard prog quartet plus frontman Mike Fletcher on wind instruments. They developped a slighly jazz-tinged progressive rock so typical of that era and their debut album had some great moments (the longer tracks on side1) but was also partially flawed but ends in a bizarre poem recitation to string arrangements. Most progheads will prefer the much more even Time IsЕ. Rare album that appeared on the RCA prog label called Neon records. This album (with the line-up augmented by a second guitarist Harewood) was much more 70Тs-sounding and left loads of space for instrument interplay and hold many fine moments that every proghead looking for rare late proto-prog should investigate.

Raw Material's second album is definitely a more consistant and even album than their debut. The main improvement would be the addition of lead guitarist Cliff Harewood. Raw Material is one of those groups that could typify best the term Proto-prog as their early and short career produced two adventuresome albums both much worth investigating.

If the debut was very uneven (having one track meandering into beatnick poetry) , this album's strong point is that there are no weak tracks. However of the six tracks present (a little error in the above informations) , none are really highlights or stand out that much as to create a masterpiece either. The three side A tracks are all fine , interesting prog involving good flute and sax work. Only the vocals are rather perfectible and some guitar work is a bit repetitive. Miracle Worker and Religion are a bit in the same mold but are shorter as to make room for the more imposing Sun God tracks with many mood changes and Floyd-esque athmospheres, but somehow the track has all of the asstes on its side but does not manage to take off to nirvana.

Raw Material's two album can be considered a bit as lost 70s nuggets/gems but are not really THE hidden treasure you were waiting for. Certainly worth discovering and a few spins but nothing worth writing a telegram home about either. (http://www.progarchives.com)

У истоков RAW MATERIAL стояли саксофонист Майкл Флетчер (ранее играл в STEAM) и клавишник Колин Кэтт. Именно их инструменты стоят на первом плане обоих альбомов. Подписав в сентябре 1969 года контракт с Evolution records, группа в начале 1970го выпустила два сингла - Time and illusion/Bobo's party и Hi there Halleluja/Days of fighting cock. Частично эти песни попали на первую пластинку RAW MATERIAL, которая появилась в продаже в начале 1970 года. Альбом получился очень не ровным. Наряду с истинными шедеврами (Time and illusion, Destruction of America) присутствуют и довольно бледные (особенно если сравнивать их с лучшими композициями) треки (Pear on an apple tree, Traveler man).
Положение группы в мире бизнеса было очень не стабильным, сменив лэйбл на RCA, уже к следующему году музыканты приготовили материал для нового диска. Time is состоит всего из шести композиций, но каких композиций… От былой сырости звука не осталось и следа. Более того, у коллектива появилось четкое направление (все заигрывания с хардом и блюзом остались на предыдущей пластинке).
И хотя их прогрессивный рок по большому счету не был столь оригинален как, скажем, работы YES или PINK FLOYD того же периода, то музыка была полна необъяснимого обаяния. Мелодии были тщательно выверены и на редкость качественно (для 71 года) записаны.
Подлинным украшением Time is стали две трех частные композиции - Insolent Lady и Sun god. Обе соединяли в себе мягкие фолковые пассажи, плавно переплетающиеся с мощными гитарными рифами. А в качестве экзотической приправы выступали неистовые сольные партии на органе либо саксофоне.
Отсутствие коммерческого успеха привело к тому, что в середине 1971 года коллектив распался. В последствии гитарист Дейв Грин собрал группу SHOOT вместе с барабанщиком Craig Collinge, басистом Bill Russell и клавишником/вокалистом Jim McCarty (Да-да, не удивляйтесь. Это именно тот Маккарти, барабанщик из YARDBIRDS. Только на этот раз он выступил в роли композитора и вокалиста.). Выпустив один альбом On the frontiers и один сингл On the frontiers/Ships and sales (обе работы вышли в 1973 году) эта группа также распалась. О дальнейшей судьбе участников этого великолепного коллектива ничего не известно.
