The Third Eye (South Africa)

Time and fortune have not been kind to Third Eye. Back in the late 1960s they were one of the top acts in South Africa, recording three powerful albums that easily matched the creative output of their now better-known contemporaries. Four decades on, though, and they are the also-rans in the contest to name the nation’s rock royalty. Search the web for information on the band and all that pops up is sketchy information on their recording output and brief notes on recent revival concerts. Search for the recordings of Third Eye and you would – until this timely reissue – have been hard pressed to find anything other than the hugely expensive original vinyl pressings. Although badly reproduced CDs of their releases – Awakening, Searching and Brother – have been available on bootleg labels, the band have been poorly represented in digital form. The Third Eye - Awakening... (1969)

From the legendary hard rocking South African psych rock scene, alongside such greats as Freedom’s Children, and Suck, comes The Third Eye. Awakening is the Third Eye’s debut full length, originally released in 1969, and is a masterful and complex album of late sixties South African heavy psych, featuring fuzzed out guitars, great brass arrangements and virtuosic organ work, provided by the young Dawn Selby, who, at the time of recording was all of 14 years old! Awakening comes (LP) in a deluxe, super thick gatefold package, and is STRICTLY limited to 500 copies worldwide!

The second album of lost South African heavy jams from The Third Eye. Searching has been a long sought after obscurity, and is now back from the dead. Searching was originally released 1969, and finds The Third Eye getting even heavier than their previous release, Awakening

The Third Eye - Brother (1970)

Brother is the third album of lost heavy psych from the South African band, the Third Eye, and was originally released in 1970. Brother bores more resemblance to their debut album, Awakening, in its increased focus on complex arrangements over visceral heaviness, and minus the brass instruments. Brother features more Hammond organ work than previous outings as well.
